The Gulf of California is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptionally high biodiversity.

Liquefied Natural Gas Plants (LNG)

THE PATH OF Natural FOSSIL GAS

It is extracted by poisoning

The fossil gas they want to export is extracted through fracking, a technique that poisons water, subsoil, land, and air. Its use is linked to cases of cancer and respiratory diseases.

Mega gas pipelines are mega risks

Gas crosses Mexico through pipelines, a physical barrier that fragments ecosystems and alters water flows and rivers. The Sierra Madre pipeline (proposed) would measure 800 km.

A city of steel and fire

These plants would cool the gas to turn it into liquid. The liquefaction megaproject in Puerto Libertad, Sonora, a fishing village, would cover 400 hectares. Its flares would burn continuously, polluting the air.

IT WOULD BE APPROX. 70 TIMES THE SIZE OF ESTADIO AZTECA

Whale-killing ships

To transport the gas, they would use enormous ships that would navigate through the Gulf of California, driving away and killing the whales that currently inhabit the Aquarium of the World.

THEY MEASURE 300 M IN LENGTH. THE EQUIVALENT OF TWELVE ADULT BLUE WHALES

The route of methane carrier ships is being proposed directly over whale migration routes.

Collisions

One of the main causes of whale deaths is collisions with large ships.

NOISE POLLUTION

The ability to hear is crucial for whale survival. The noise from ships would have a very large impact area, disorienting them or even leaving them deaf.

YOU CAN DEFEND AND SAVE OUR WHALES.

Tell us what you're doing. Share your ideas, activities, and local initiatives we can collaborate on.

GET ORGANIZED!

Here are a few ideas you can put into action.

We are a community of businesses committed to protecting our oceans and safeguarding whales in the Gulf of California.

Join us

Encourage students, from primary school to high school, to channel their desire to protect whales and their ecosystem through a proactive, playful campaign that highlights the value of caring for our shared home.

Join us

The first legal claim for the rights of nature has been accepted and is moving forward. There are currently 10 legal cases preventing the construction of projects that would harm whales and the Gulf of California ecosystem.

Gas is mostly methane, a fossil fuel. It’s called “natural” gas, but it is as natural as oil or coal, which are also fossil fuels. They are the main drivers of global warming and the climate crisis.
