Mexican Whales Are Being Threatened

The Gulf of California is a World Heritage Site due to its high biodiversity.

THE PATH OF FOSSIL GAS
Extracted by poisoning
The fossil gas they want to export is extracted through fracking — a technique that poisons water, soil, land, and air. Its use has been directly linked to increases in cancer cases and respiratory diseases.
Megapipeline means megarisk
As a physical barrier, it would fragment ecosystems and alter the flow of rivers and runoff water. The gas would travel through an 800 km pipeline that would cross vast territories and leak gas along the way.
It would leak gas
throughout its entire route

A City of Steel and Fire
The liquefaction megaplant planned for Puerto Libertad, Sonora, would cover 400 hectares. Its gas flares would burn continuously, polluting the air permanently.
It would measure roughly 70 Azteca Stadiums.

The Whale-Killing Ships
To transport the gas, enormous ships would sail through the Gulf of California, driving away and killing the whales that inhabit what Jacques Cousteau once called the Aquarium of the World.

Collisions
One of the leading causes of whale deaths is collisions with large ships.
NOISE POLLUTION
Hearing is vital to whale survival. The noise from ships would create a large impact zone, disorienting whales or even leaving them deaf.
